What is the Maboneng Heart & Lung Institute?
The Maboneng Heart & Lung Institute is a multidisciplinary surgical unit specializing in congenital and acquired surgical heart and lung pathology. The unit is based at the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital.
Who are the cardiothoracic surgeons?
The unit currently has three full time cardiothoracic surgeons: Dr Hendrick Mamorare, Dr Erich Schürmann and Dr Viljee Jonker.
What operations are performed by the unit?
The unit is famous for its congenital heart surgery. Seven hundred children undergo cardiac surgical procedures annually, making it the busiest unit on the African continent. The full range of surgery is covered from Patent Ductus Arteriosus surgery to the complex Norwood procedure for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. Recently, cardiac transplantation and mechanical heart assist devices were added to the scope of practice.
Adult cardiac surgery as well as lung surgery for all ages is also performed at the unit. ECMO support is also offered for the critical respiratory failure patients.
What other specialist services are offered?
The surgeons form part of a well-established interdisciplinary team consisting of paediatric and adult cardiologists, pulmonologists, paediatric intensivists, cardiac anaesthetists, microbiologists, cardiopulmonary perfusionists, physiotherapists, dieticians, speech therapists, cardiac intensive care nurses, cardiac scrub nurses and general nursing staff. Post-operative patients are seen daily on a grand ward round consisting of all of the above disciplines. We believe in a team approach with every single patient.
Is there an academic affiliation with the Maboneng Cardiac and Lung Institute?
The Institute is affiliated with the University of Pretoria.
